LKQ is a leading distributor of automotive parts and accessories with operations in over 20 countries across Europe and North America. Its logistics center near the D1 highway in the Czech Republic is a key hub in the entire distribution network. Faced with increasing operational volume, high security demands, and rising costs associated with physical guarding, LKQ decided to partner with M2C to digitize and automate its security processes. The goal was to elevate security standards, reduce operating costs, and streamline site surveillance.
Initial Challenges
Cost of Physical Security: The center required more than ten security personnel, whose wages constituted a significant portion of operational costs. These expenses grew annually, despite much of the work being routine and lacking significant added value.
Manual Processes: Over 1,000 photos and records needed to be manually processed and sorted daily. Guards performed manual checks of ramps, warehouses, and access points, creating a substantial time burden.
Complex Handling of Camera Footage: Finding specific events based on license plate, time, or location was time-consuming and often inaccurate. This slowed incident response and decreased overall security effectiveness.
Fire Risks: The warehouses contain battery cells, posing an increased fire risk. Without thermal monitoring, there was a danger of late detection of overheating or technical faults.
Complex Infrastructure: The site was equipped with over 250 cameras of various types and ages. Integrating them into a unified system required meticulous network segmentation and storage configuration.
Limited Remote Monitoring: Managing entry corridors and personnel checks was only possible physically on-site, reducing flexibility and increasing costs.
A tailored Solution: Two-Phase Digitization
M2C designed and implemented a comprehensive solution divided into two main phases: a CCTV system with thermal cameras and the automation of entry corridors. The entire solution is overseen by the M2C Space remote monitoring center.
Phase 1 – CCTV System and Thermal Cameras
The first phase focused on modernizing the camera system and adding thermal cameras for the highest possible level of security.
Goals:
Automate the monitoring of ramps, warehouses, and outdoor areas.
Increase the level of fire safety.
Reduce the need for physical guards.
Key Solution Elements:
Unified Platform for 250+ Cameras: All existing and new cameras were integrated into a single system, allowing the entire site to be remotely monitored and managed.
License Plate Recognition (LPR): Cameras automatically identify vehicle registration plates and link them to relevant events—such as the arrival and departure of trucks.
Thermal Monitoring: Special cameras track temperatures in warehouses and technology areas. They can timely detect overheating batteries, machinery, or electrical systems, preventing potential fires.
Long-Term Footage Archiving: All camera footage is stored in full quality for up to 30 months. This allows for the investigation of older incidents.
Smart Camera Integration: Upon a truck's arrival, the ramp view is automatically synchronized with a view into the cargo space—giving the operator an immediate, comprehensive overview of the entire loading/unloading process.
Advanced Search: Incidents can be found retrospectively within seconds—simply by entering a license plate, time, or specific event.

Phase 2 – Automated Turnstiles
The second phase focused on automating access to the facility to enhance the security and efficiency of the entire entry and exit process.
Goals:
Minimize reliance on physical personnel checks.
Improve loss prevention and the accuracy of movement control.
Key Solution Elements:
Smart Entry Corridors with Turnstiles: Turnstiles operate bi-directionally and are equipped with metal detectors. Every passage is monitored by a camera, automatically recording who entered and when.
Remote Surveillance and Communication: A security operator can remotely monitor all entries from the M2C Space central control center and communicate with the person at the turnstile if necessary.
Integration with Existing Access System: The turnstiles were linked to the internal access card system, eliminating the need to introduce new infrastructure.
Emergency Mode on Alarm: In the event of a fire or other emergency, the turnstiles automatically unlock, allowing free passage in all directions.
Oversized Object Access: Special doors, which require operator approval for opening, are used for transferring larger shipments or equipment.
